Before Tega Cay existed, the peninsula was known as India Hook Hills, a red-clay spur jutting into the Catawba; Duke Power sold 1,600 acres of it to Charlotte's Ervin Company in 1970, and the gated community's earliest landscaping is now more than fifty years old, while residents didn't vote to incorporate as a town until July 4, 1982.
