Removal can require permission
Trees can be protected in ways that surprise homeowners. Preservation review can reach mature specimens on designated properties, and stormwater considerations attach to removals that change how a site absorbs and slows water — particularly on slopes. Both can carry replacement expectations. Removing first and enquiring afterwards is the expensive order in which to do this.

Confirm protection status before any removal
Citywide guidance cannot tell you whether your specific tree is protected, whether replacement is required, or whether it is genuinely a hazard. Confirm the first two with the city and the third with an arborist not quoting the removal.
